Amazon and eBay are becoming tax havens for Chinese sellers

The online retail giant is able to offer prices unmatched by traditional physical stores and deliver various products from bestsellers to mobile phone chargers to customers in a few days or even hours. Like the United States, online retail in Europe is eating into the share of the physical retail market. It is predicted that by 2023, 21% of all non grocery retail sales in some large European economies will come from online sales, compared with only 13% last year. However, large digital platforms that provide third-party sellers with outlets are increasingly being attacked for helping foreign retailers evade taxes. In the European Union, almost all e-commerce platform sellers are required to report and pay a sales tax called value added tax (VAT). The standard VAT rate is 20% in the UK and 19% in Germany.
